Bioreactor

Bioreactors come in various designs and sizes — from small laboratory units to large industrial systems.

A bioreactor, sometimes called a fermenter, is a device or system used to grow microorganisms or plant or animal cells under controlled conditions to produce biologically active substances such as antibiotics, proteins, enzymes, monoclonal antibodies and cell cultures. Bioreactors come in various designs and sizes — from small laboratory units to large industrial systems.

Basic functions of bioreactors (German translation: Bioreaktoren):

  • Maintaining optimum conditions for cell growth: Bioreactors can be used to control parameters such as temperature, pH value, oxygen and nutrient concentrations, which are crucial for optimal cell growth and metabolism (translation into German: Stoffwechsel).
  • Substance exchange: Agitation and aeration systems ensure an even distribution of cells, nutrients and oxygen throughout the reactor.
  • Monitoring and control: Modern bioreactors are equipped with sensors and control systems that monitor and control important process parameters in real time.

Applications in bioreactors include, among other things:

  • Manufacture of pharmaceutical products: Cultivation of microorganisms or cell cultures for the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients.
  • Biotechnology: Development and production of biotechnological products, including enzymes (German: Enzyme), proteins and bioplastics.
  • Agriculture: Cultivation of microorganisms for the production of biofertilizers and biopesticides.
  • Research: Use of bioreactors in scientific research to study cell metabolism, genetic processes and other biological processes.
  • Regenerative medicine and tissue engineering: Cultivation of cells and tissues to repair or replace damaged tissue and organs.

Bioreactors play a key role in the development of modern biotechnology and pharmacy as they provide efficient and sustainable methods for the production of a wide range of biological products.
