Bulk goods

Bulk goods have several advantages, including a reduced packaging material, which means lower costs and waste minimization. Processes can become more efficient by integrating raw materials directly into production lines.

The term bulk goods is used in various contexts to describe goods or materials that are bought, stored, transported or sold in large quantities without individual packaging. In the pharmaceutical industry and other sectors, it refers to the delivery of goods or raw materials in unpackaged or unprocessed form that require further processing or packaging.

Examples of the use of the term bulk goods (German translation: Bulkware):

  • Pharmaceutical industry: Active pharmaceutical ingredients, excipients or intermediates (German: Zwischenprodukte) that are produced and supplied in large quantities for further use in the manufacture of finished drug products. These products must be further processed, e.g. by  using them to manufacture a drug, dividing them into individual doses or packaging them.
  • Food industry: Raw materials such as grain or dried fruit can be supplied as dry bulk goods (German: Schüttgut) for further processing in production facilities or for individual packaging.
  • Chemical industry: Chemical reagents and materials are often purchased in large quantities for use in the synthesis of complex chemical compounds.

Bulk goods have several advantages, including Reduced packaging material, which means lower costs and waste minimization. Processes can become more efficient by integrating raw materials directly into production lines.

However, the storage of bulk goods is associated with more requirements, as suitable storage conditions must be created for large quantities of products that can react sensitively to environmental factors. After all, the risk of spoilage or expiration is greater than with individual packaging.
