Vaccines

A vaccine is a biologic that is used to stimulate the body’s immune system in order to prevent disease. Vaccines (German translation: Impfstoffe) for active immunization contain antigens (specific components of microorganisms such as viruses or bacteria) that can trigger an immune response without causing disease. When a person or animal receives a vaccine, their immune system “learns” to recognize these antigens and produce antibodies against them. Passive immunizations are vaccines that already contain antibodies, meaning that the body does not have to produce them itself. This provides immediate protection against the disease in question, but for nowhere near as long as with an active immunization (German translation: aktive Immunisierung).

Vaccines play an important role in public health and medicine as they help prevent many infectious diseases. Vaccines have been developed to combat a variety of diseases, including viral infections such as measles, influenza and polio, as well as bacterial infections such as diphtheria and tetanus.

When the body is vaccinated, the immune system produces antibodies (translation into German: Antikörper) and learns to recognize them. This enables the body to fight pathogens quickly and effectively if it is exposed to them in the future. This process is referred to as immunization and helps build collective immunity in a community, thereby reducing the spread of infections and saving lives.
