Blood products

Blood products can be of crucial importance in the treatment of various diseases and conditions. They can save lives in the event of severe blood loss.

Blood products are medical products that are manufactured from human blood or blood components and are used for medical purposes. They are mainly obtained through blood donations and are used for transfer (transfusion) to a recipient. Blood products can be of crucial importance in the treatment of various diseases and conditions. In the event of severe blood loss, they can save lives.

Blood products (German translation: Blutprodukte) include the following types of products:

  • Red cell concentrates (concentrate of red blood cells): This product is obtained by separating and purifying red blood cells from donor blood. It is used to treat anemia (reduced hemoglobin levels) or significant blood loss, e.g. as a result of trauma or surgery.
  • Fresh frozen plasma (FFP): Fresh frozen plasma (translation into German: gefrorenes Frischplasma) contains many proteins, coagulation factors and antibodies and is used to treat or prevent bleeding in patients with coagulation disorders, burns and other diseases.
  • Platelet concentrate: These products contain platelets (also called thrombocytes, German: Thrombozyten), which are important for blood coagulation and can help to prevent or stop bleeding. They are often used to treat patients with thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) or before surgeries.
  • Cryoprecipitates: These are products that contain high concentrations of proteins such as fibrinogen and coagulation factors. They can be used to treat coagulation disorders.
  • Immunoglobulins: Immunoglobulins are produced from plasma and are used to treat various immunological disorders and to prevent or treat infections in patients with weakened immune systems.
  • Antithrombin (AT) and other coagulation inhibitors: These products can be used to treat blood coagulation disorders and to prevent thromboembolism.

Blood products are manufactured under strict quality and safety standards. They can be used for various purposes, e.g. in emergencies, during surgical procedures, in chemotherapy and in the treatment of chronic diseases. The main source of blood products is donated blood (German: Spenderblut). Their production and use is strictly regulated by medical organizations and authorities to ensure the safety and efficacy of treatment. Therefore, in Germany, records of blood products supplied must be kept for at least 30 years.
