Counterfeit drugs (translation into German: gefälschte Arzneimittel) can be ineffective, harmful or even fatal, as they may contain too little active pharmaceutical ingredient, impurities and/or other harmful ingredients.

This phenomenon poses a serious problem worldwide, as counterfeit drugs can jeopardize the health and safety of patients and diminish their trust in the medical industry. They can be sold via illegal distribution channels, the internet, markets or other means, and are often disguised as original or name-brand products.

Most countries have strict legal measures and regulations in place to combat counterfeit drugs, as well as international agreements to prevent and stop their spread. Pharmaceutical manufacturers are also taking measures to protect their products from falsification, e.g. through the use of sealed packaging (German translation: versiegelte Verpackung) and tracing technologies such as securPharm.
