In this section of GMP-inspection.com, our translators provide definitions and explanations of various specialized terms from the pharmaceutical industry and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice).
The destruction or disposal of drugs is the controlled process of neutralizing drugs that cannot or should not be used in order to prevent them from falling into the wrong hands or harming the environment. In many countries, the disposal (German: Entsorgung) of drugs is regulated by national and international laws and regulations. These measures aim to minimize the risk to human health, the public and the environment.
Some reasons that drugs must be disposed of:
In Germany, patients can usually dispose of their expired or no longer needed drugs in the residual waste, as this is incinerated. Under no circumstances should you dispose of drugs in the toilet, as they can end up directly in the wastewater and harm the environment. However, some particularly toxic drugs, such as cytostatics, should not be disposed of with residual waste. Drugs such as cytostatics are treated as hazardous waste and are usually incinerated in special incinerators (translation into German: Verbrennungsanlagen), where the active pharmaceutical ingredients decompose. German law dictates that narcotics must be destroyed, i.e. they must be disposed of in such a way that recovery, even in parts, is impossible. Disposal in residual waste is therefore only permitted if the narcotic has been destroyed beforehand.
Proper destruction or disposal of drugs not only helps to prevent accidental use and abuse but also protects the ecosystem from potentially hazardous substances. Pharmaceutical companies, pharmacies and healthcare facilities must strictly adhere to legal regulations and established procedures when handling pharmaceutical waste.
