Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP)

GPP sets standards for the professional conduct of pharmacists as well as the management and operation of pharmacies.

Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP; German: Gute Apothekenpraxis) is a set of standards and principles designed to ensure high-quality and safe patient care in pharmacies and other facilities where pharmaceutical services are provided. GPP sets standards for the professional conduct of pharmacists as well as the management and operation of pharmacies (German translation: Apotheken). In Germany, many of these standards are regulated by applicable legislation. For example, the German Federal Pharmacists’ Code defines the general activities that the pharmacist profession includes and who is authorized to practice it.

The most important aspects of Good Pharmacy Practice include:

  • Ethics and professionalism: Pharmacists maintain high standards of ethical behavior and professionalism in patient care, and have the patient’s well-being in mind.
  • Dispensing drugs safely and correctly: Pharmacists must ensure that patients receive the correct drugs in the correct dose and with the correct instructions for use.
  • Compliance with regulations and standards: Pharmacies must comply with all applicable national and international laws and regulations for storing and dispensing drugs (translation into German: Lagerung und Abgabe von Arzneimitteln).
  • Quality control: Ensuring the quality and integrity of drugs, including checking expiry dates and storage conditions.
  • Information and advice for patients: Providing patients with information about prescription drugs, their use, possible side effects and interactions (German translation: Wechselwirkungen) as well as other advice on health-related issues.
  • Records and documentation: Documentation of all procedures involved in the manufacture, testing, dispensing and sale of drugs.
  • Sanitary and hygiene standards: Ensuring cleanliness and compliance with hygiene standards in pharmacies, especially in the preparation of drugs.
  • Staff training and further education: Ongoing staff training to ensure that they have the necessary knowledge and up-to-date information.
  • Confidentiality: Protection of the confidentiality of medical data and patient information.

Good Pharmacy Practice is crucial for safety and quality when dispensing drugs and performing other pharmaceutical services. These standards help to protect patients from adverse drug reactions, ensure that drugs are taken correctly and provide accurate and useful health and drug information.
